Small Molecules From Stemgent
Be they natural metabolites or synthetic low molecular weight organic compounds, small molecules demonstrate diverse biological function. Their impact on cell signaling pathways and downstream effects on normal and abnormal cell growth and differentiation is of intense interest to stem cell biologists. An expanding array of small molecules has been shown to modulate the fate of stem cells by either promoting differentiation and proliferation, or by maintaining them in a pluripotent, undifferentiated state.
Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell generation, a critical tool in stem cell research, has traditionally been achieved by viral transduction of oncogenic transcription factors – a challenging process. Recent studies, however, have shown that some of the four genes originally thought to be required for iPS cell generation may be dispensable. Several alternative defined conditions are capable of improving efficiency and kinetics, generating more homogeneous iPS populations. These defined conditions are made possible with the use of various combinations of small molecules affecting reprogramming, self-renewal, and differentiation.
